Leadership Development

using the metaphor of the conductor as a leader

We utilize the power of music!

The Sound of Leadership® is based on the realisation that the world of classical music has over 200 years’ experience in training leaders. Since 1811, the University of Paris has offered a course in ‘conducting’, which is essentially the leadership of a team of specialists. We musicians therefore usually decide right at the start of our studies whether we want to become specialists or whether we wish to take on the great responsibility of leadership. Therein lies a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Ever since my time as a student at the Guildhall School of Music in London, I have remembered the astonishingly significant difference that a conductor made to me personally, to my discipline and to my willingness to commit. One day, a young student worked with us, the student orchestra, and the next day an experienced, established conductor – with the same people in the orchestra, the same piece, the same venue! And yet: the difference was enormous! On the second day, nobody was late, nobody was secretly chatting to their colleagues, and everyone was ready to give their best.

Ever since then, I have been observing myself, my colleagues and the whole orchestra very closely at every opportunity and under every conductor. Since then, I have gained many realisations, insights and hypotheses, and above all, it has become – and continues to become – ever clearer to me just how multi-layered the metaphor of conductors and their orchestras is!

Likewise, as part of this personal development, it became clear to me that the power of music, which touches and moves me and many of my colleagues, is accessible to everyone – though many still need a ‘door opener’ to our world. However, as soon as they dare to step inside, something astonishing happens.

These two realisations – the clarity of the metaphor and the power of music – led me to put my idea into practice. That was in the spring of 2010. And since then, our work and our organisation have continued to evolve, with the aim of giving as many people as possible the chance to experience the metaphor and the power of music in different ways – so that they can recognise and de-velop their own strengths and potential.

Since 2010, we have been working with leaders from all sectors – business, sport and other organisations.

Why music reveals leadership

Today we know that the true power of The Sound of Leadership® does not lie solely in the metaphor of the conductor. It lies in the fact that music immediately reveals the impact of leadership. Music consists of patterns, repetitions, variations, tension and resolution. Even the slightest changes alter the sound of an ensemble.
Leadership works in a similar way.

Leaders, too, follow patterns – often unconsciously. The way they communicate, make decisions, project their presence or deal with uncertainty has a direct impact on the people around them.
In day-to-day leadership, this impact often remains invisible in the moment – but in a musical setting, it becomes immediately audible and tangible.

That is why we do not use music as entertainment or as a nice metaphor. We use it as precise, real-time feedback. It shows leaders immediately what effect their behaviour has – without judgement, without blame and without lengthy analysis.

This creates something that traditional leadership training programmes rarely facilitate: a deep awareness of one’s own impact. For only what becomes conscious can be consciously changed.

Our operating principle

ExperienceAwareness Integration

We are convinced that sustainable development does not arise from knowledge alone. People change their behaviour in a lasting way when they experience their own impact first-hand. That is why we create experiential spaces in which leaders can develop an awareness of their impact, recognise their own patterns and test new forms of leadership directly.

Experience leads to realisation. Realisation leads to change.

And through reflection and transfer, this change is firmly embedded in day-to-day leadership practice.

Our Approach

We believe in a form of leadership that connects people rather than controlling them. In presence rather than posturing. In resonance rather than pressure. In clarity rather than volume.

And we believe that every individual can harness their own strengths and potential – and then, with ease and clarity, find their own positive path to confident leadership.

The Sound of Leadership® creates spaces in which leaders can consciously experience their impact, understand resonance and discover new ways of leading. From this awareness emerges clarity, resonance and effective leadership that connects people and provides direction.

Since 2010 The Sound of Leadership® has been continuously refined and tested with leaders from a wide range of industries. Today, the concept combines international musical experience, leadership development and dialogue-based process expertise into a unique, experience-based learning approach.

If you’d like not only to understand leadership but also to experience it first-hand, we look forward to speaking with you.
